INTRODUCTIONSetting the stage for research-driven design

This project focused on uncovering user needs and translating insights into impactful design interventions. Through qualitative research and visual prototyping, I developed actionable solutions backed by a deep understanding of user behavior and context.

CHALLENGEDefining actionable problems through user research

The project began with the challenge of defining a precise and actionable "How Might We" (HMW) question. This required unpacking complex user needs, identifying pain points, and developing a clear context. I needed to not only conduct research effectively but also translate findings into tangible design interventions.

STRATEGY & DESIGN PROCESS
01. Framing the Question

I started with visual tools like mind mapping to explore potential issues and contexts. After iterative refinement, I developed a focused HMW question that clearly addressed the audience, context, and design challenge.

02. Applying Research Methods

To gain insights, I conducted:
  • User Interviews – Engaged directly with target users to gather qualitative feedback.
  • Ethnographic Observations – Observed real-life contexts to uncover subtle user needs.
  • Literature Reviews – Synthesized existing research to contextualize user behaviors and preferences.

Findings were documented systematically and served as a foundation for design solutions.

03. Audience Receptivity Gradient & Personas

I visualized user engagement through an Audience Receptivity Gradient, helping to identify which segments were most open to intervention. Based on research, I created detailed personas to represent user goals, behaviors, and frustrations.

04. User Journey Mapping

Using insights from research, I mapped the user journey, identifying key touchpoints and pain points. This helped spotlight areas where design interventions could have the most impact.

05. Prototyping Design Interventions

I created three visual prototypes to represent potential design solutions. Each prototype showed how the intervention would function in real contexts, including:
  • Step-by-step interactions
  • Reflections on user engagement
  • Visual cues to demonstrate the user experience

The prototypes were intentionally unpolished to simulate early-stage client presentations and included both digital and hand-drawn elements.

OUTCOME
Delivering a refined, research-backed proposal

The final deliverable included a comprehensive presentation summarizing the research process, visual diagrams, personas, journey maps, and three design interventions. Feedback from peers and instructors highlighted the clarity and depth of the research, as well as the feasibility of the proposed solutions.

LEARNINGS
Refining clarity through consistency and research

This project emphasized the importance of visual consistency and asset quality in presenting research. Standardizing formatting and improving visual clarity had a significant impact on the professionalism of the final proposal. It reinforced the value of grounding design in research and communicating findings effectively.
