INTRODUCTIONExploring the intersection of technology, art, and culture
Oneum is a project that explores the relationship between Hangul and Latin typography, using K-pop as a medium to highlight the role of Hangul in contemporary design. Named after the pure Korean term for "whole tone" or "whole step," Oneum emphasizes the beauty of Hangul as a crucial element of cultural identity. By integrating typography with K-pop visuals, this project showcases how design can bridge tradition and modernity, resonating with audiences familiar with both Korean and global pop culture.
LINGUISTIC RESEARCH & ANALYSIS
Understanding the Relationship Between Hangul and Latin
To create a harmonious bilingual design, we examined the structural differences between Hangul and Latin scripts. Key insights included:
DESIGN PROCESS
01. References
We began by researching creative examples of Hangul in web and print design, focusing on projects that successfully integrated multiple scripts.
02. Brainstorming
Since K-pop is a cultural phenomenon deeply tied to language and identity, we selected songs from various generations to reflect the evolution of Hangul’s typographic applications.
03. Sketching
We began with a UX flowchart to map the user journey, ensuring smooth navigation. From there, we created initial wireframes for an interactive showcase of Hangul typography, incorporating K-pop aesthetics and multi-script elements.
04. Designing
To highlight Hangul’s versatility, we designed album covers and CDs with a type-centric approach, blending calligraphy with contemporary fonts. These designs visually represented the rhythm and character of the selected K-pop tracks.
05. Printing & Cutting
After finalizing the designs, we printed and assembled physical album covers and jewel cases, transforming digital typography into tangible artifacts.
06. Prototyping
The website prototype focused on user interaction, mapping a seamless flow that allowed users to explore the typographic elements of Hangul within a K-pop context.
FINAL OUTCOMES
Album Cover Designs & Jewel Case Prototypes
Our printed album covers and jewel cases showcased the dynamic potential of Hangul typography, demonstrating how type can act as a visual storytelling tool in music packaging.
Oneum Website Prototype
The interactive website extends this concept into digital space, allowing users to engage with Hangul’s typographic diversity through an immersive, music-inspired experience. The design choices reinforce the connection between language, identity, and artistic expression.
CONCLUSION
Reflections on Typography, Culture, and Future Possibilities
Oneum successfully merges typography, music, and culture, celebrating Hangul’s role in shaping visual identity. By integrating traditional and contemporary elements, the project invites audiences to appreciate the artistry of Hangul while experiencing its evolution through K-pop. Moving forward, Oneum has the potential to expand into further explorations of multi-script typography, interactive storytelling, and cultural design innovations.
